What a great morning drive we had in which we viewed the Big Five. It started off with wonderful sightings of two breeding herds of buffalo feeding next to the main road. We then moved off and found five male lions – part of the Mapogo pride - these lions are feared by all. They were sleeping in the shade of a marula tree busy recharging for their next feast. Next we found a large rhino bull crossing the main road slowly making his way towards one of the pans to have a drink. Further down the road we had a great sighting of a small breeding herd of elephants, but as they were on the move we were unable to spend quality time with them. General game was in abundance with great sightings once again of zebra, impala and blue wildebeest. We then started making our way back to the lodge but were first rewarded with the male leopard, Matimba slowly walking down the drive way. He was extremely relaxed and offered us great photographic opportunities. The afternoon drive started off with a small herd of giraffe. Next we once again viewed the male lions of this morning. They were still sleeping and only started to hunt later on in the evening. They stalked a giraffe bull but were` not successful in their hunt; they then gave up and once again lay down. Next we had a fantastic sighting of a small breeding herd of buffalo. We stopped at one of the dams to enjoy our sundowners and were rewarded with a great display by the hippos; they were then joined by a large crocodile who surfaced to see what all the noise was about. As we slowly started making our way back to the lodge we came across a couple of elephants feeding on some marulas. Lastly we had a great sighting of Matimba, the young male leopard, slowly walking down the driveway. |
