We had a fantastic drive this morning! The drive started off quietly with sightings of general game in front of the lodge but then the call came in that wild dogs had been seen in our area and the chase was on. They are extremely rare but we managed to find then close to the lodge. The pack was on the hunt and we battled to keep up with them, we did however manage to get some great photographic opportunities but eventually lost them in the thick bush. We then came across a breeding herd of buffalo; they were lying in the shade to escape the heat of the morning. As we started to make our way back to the lodge we stopped to view two elephant bulls eating Marulas next to the road. Amidst great enjoyment we once again viewed the wild dogs as they were running down the driveway towards us but they once again ran into the thick bush and we were unable to follow further. On the driveway we found the female leopard, Karula lying in a tree; she was extremely relaxed. We then returned to the lodge to enjoy our breakfast. Our afternoon drive started off on a bit of a sad note as we came across a young zebra that had been killed by the male in the herd. We’re not sure how this happened or why but some predator will find the youngster during the night and the carcass will be gone by the morning. Next we viewed a small journey of giraffe slowly feeding on the fresh leaves of a Knob thorn tree. We then found Matimba, young male leopard; he was on the hunt and chased an impala but was not successful. He eventually climbed a tree when a small breeding herd of buffalo got to close for comfort. After we had spent some time with the buffalo we followed up on five rhino that had been sighted earlier in the drive; they were found close to a waterhole. Next we then came across a small breeding herd of elephants slowly making their way through the bush. We then finished off our drive with Karula, female leopard and one of her cubs; they were lying at the bottom of a Marula tree and were extremely relaxed. Another end to a fantastic day in the bush. |
